We’ve all had those days where we don’t want to exercise but what about those times when you actually cant, injury, health, work schedule or commitments that take you away from your usual routine. It happens to us all from time to time and can really throw a spanner in your usually healthy path and if you’re not careful it can lead to a total derailment of your progress and mindset.
Don’t panic, first you have to admit that this is unfortunately how it is for now, it doesn’t make you a bad person, you’re not going to turn into Mr Blobby overnight and you will at some point be back hitting it hard within no time.
Secondly, you have to add a little more thought into your day. If exercise is out of the window then nutrition has to be your new best friend. You don’t have to live on lettuce and karate kick all carbohydrates out of your day but you do have to monitor your emotions, cravings and macros a little more closely. Whenever I am unable to exercise to my usual intensity I pop back to MyFitnessPal and aim to stay around 40% non processed carbs, 30% fat and 30% protein – it tends to work really well for me and prevents me from demolishing the closest vending machine out of frustration.
There is always something you can do, it just might not be as exciting, sociable or efficient as your usual run, yoga or HIIT class. One of my favourite recommendations is walking, it’s one of the most comfortable and cost effective exercises out there and highly underrated. For those of you who need a little more intensity in your life pop on a backpack and fill it with water bottles or cans of food, this will ramp up the weight and make your usual stroll to the coffee shop a little harder. I also fully recommend the App Earthmiles to make walking a little more exciting. It’s a free App where the more you walk, the more discount you receive on products you enjoy, it’s the perfect reward.
You could also offer to walk a friends pup, or join an online dog walking website like Borrow my Doggy not only will your four legged friend enhance your mood, you’ll probably walk further and boost those feel good vibes at the same time.. (even better if the owner is single & your type!)
Don’t panic, exercise is always here for you, enjoy the break, move where you can and nourish appropriately, muscle memory is amazing and will have you back in no time.
